MPWT Pushing for Further Talks to Start Construction of Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) chaired a working committee meeting with China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC) on Monday, 24 October, in order to accelerate the implementation of the expressway infrastructure project connecting Phnom Penh to Bavet City in Svay Rieng province.

At the meeting, both sides reviewed and discussed the framework agreement and are now pushing for the completion of public-private partnership agreements soon begin the construction of the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway.

The Minister of Public Works, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, previously confirmed during the inspection of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway on 21 September 2022, that the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway project may begin construction in mid-2023.

According to the Senior Minister, the Ministry of Public Works has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and is ready to sign the FA Framework Agreement soon by the end of 2022 to prepare for the beginning of construction in mid-2023.

The Senior Minister explained that the Ministry of Public Works has been asking China Railway International Group Co., Ltd (CRIG) to study undertaking this project for many years, but to no avail. Hence, the Ministry of Public Works is now working in collaboration with the CRBC to study the construction technology required for the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway. The same company also conducted this study for the construction of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway.

The Ministry plans to spend more than US $2 billion on the construction of the new 135-km Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway, which will pass through the provinces of Kandal, Prey Veng, and Svay Rieng, and will benefit citizens by expanding trade and transportation between Cambodia and neighboring countries.

In addition to the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway project, the Ministry of Public Works is also working on a number of other projects, including a subway project in Phnom Penh, a project to modernize existing railways into high-speed railways, and a project to expand water transport on the Bassac River.

Cambodia recently launched the trial period for the new 187-km Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway on 1 October. The expressway will be free to use until 31 October, and cost more than US $2 billion to construct.
